Now that is social networking in cyberspace, digital friendships are becoming a regular part of everyday life.  Whether it's broadcasting your whereabouts, stalking old friends, or managing a digital rolodex, the internet is a medium that can both enrich and tarnish friendships without any real interaction.

While much of the digital friendship discussion focuses on the extension of real-life relationships on Facebook or MySpace, there are numerous other platforms that facilitate different types of relationships.  Not sexual ones.  Well maybe, but I'm not talking about those.

Say It Ain't So, Jason

Generally, Hollywood is one of the first to latch onto whatever the latest trend becomes in marketing and technology. Trailers helped pave the way for online video. Studios were amongst the first to push the boundaries of mobile. TV shows embraced online communities and blogs well before most. But they seem to be lagging in one crucial new trend - transparency. Big brands have slowly started to open up. Even the new government is on board. But Tinseltown seems more reluctant than anyone to embrace the idea beyond a few behind the scenes features and a gag reel on the DVD.

 Last month we celebrated the first anniversary of Reflecteur, a product we created to help us understand digital culture. The modern marketplace is one that increasingly is shaped by digital culture – how people use digital platforms to connect with each other, share with like-minded people, express themselves, and find entertainment, among other tasks.

Semantics

We work in an industry of buzz words. As long as Malcolm Gladwell is writing books and insecure mad men are driven to speak in meetings, buzz words will be a way of life.

And that’s OK. It gives us something new to talk about / make fun of / learn from. But there are at least 3 words that are bad for brands. Not because of the words themselves, but because of what we’ve come to let them mean.
