Authenticity in Gaming

Written by Eric Bee May 21, 2009

Authenticity is a factor in gaming that had to wait for the technology to catch up to it.  In the early days, the two blips on the screen could easily service as "ping pong paddles," but not as something like a real-life personality or established fantasy characters (like the infamous dragon-duck from the Atari 2600 classic, "Adventure").  Now that consoles can push life-like experiences in both graphics and immersion, games are held to a higher standard of authenticity, whether its how a receiver catches a pass or a comic-book hero destroys a building.  There's no room for scuttling details away because of technological limitations.  Lucky for us, developers are rising to the occasion, earning success through remaining authentic to the core values behind their titles and representing them in the unique ways that gaming allows.

New Formula For Viral Success?

Written by Matt Gibbs May 18, 2009

trend video

Want to do something "viral" that "creates buzz"?  Here's how:

1)  Hire 50+ dancers to show up at a crowded public hot spot
2)  Turn on music
3)  Dance party time
4)  Smile at your brilliance when you see the crowd's "I'm telling everyone I know" reactions
5)  Record event with strategically placed randoms with handycams (assures authentic, not corporate-produced look)
6)  Upload to YouTube

While I'd like to say it's time for a new promotional stunt idea, the original and knockoffs have each delivered both eyeballs and pass along.

Soft Serve and Pansy Leagues

Written by Trey Ho May 10, 2009

sports

The biggest difference between the NHL and the NBA today:  The NHL rewards toughness.  Lay a guy out with a good clean check and get celebrated by your coach and teammates back in the locker room.  Spring right back up and continue skating AFTER getting laid out and you'll earn your teammates' and the other team's respect for life.  Same goes for the NFL.

EA Sports - It's in the Feed

Written by Chris Blumberg May 08, 2009

EA made headlines last month when they announced their support for @aplusk in his quest to punk Ted Turner.  The Madden publisher vowed to reward the former “Dude Where’s my Car?” headliner’s 1,000,000th follower with a copy of every game EA makes in '09.  While the media world (and my co-workers) ate this up, I think we may have missed the real headline.  EA is on Twitter?

DenuoFlash: The Wizard is Back

Written by Mary DeBrunner May 06, 2009

While this photo may more closely resemble an enraged Christian Bale, as seen in “American Psycho,” this is actually a telling college photo of our good friend and colleague Tim Harris, who has recently re-joined the ranks of Denuo as senior vice president.

While no stranger to the agency – he was one of the founders after all – Tim will focus on the development and promotion of new Denuo products and services. He will also work with Denuo clients to help them better understand and interpret the changing, modern marketplace.

As a founding member of Denuo, Tim helped build our unique plug-and-play operating model that allows us to openly collaborate with the best talent and agency resources around. He also co-founded the agency’s best-in-class gaming expertise when he launched the once standalone unit Play, the industry’s first and most recognized agency unit dedicated to leveraging videogames as a consumer contact medium.

I’m guessing to say we’re glad to have him back is an understatement. Here’s a look at what some of his Denuo colleagues are saying about him and his return:

I guess the Internets has done the same thing for unsigned artists as it has for moonlighting authors. More and more bloggers are seeing their creativity pay off not only in traffic, but also in book deals:

Stuff White People Like

Stuff On My Cat

I Can Has Cheezburger?

Hot Chicks With Douchebags

Tucker Max (NSFW, unless you have a conveniently inward-facing desk.)
