Reflecteur_45

In Reflecteur we often bring attention to sites or efforts that are redefining the mash-up in amazingly creative ways. This issue brings attention to two great examples: the Bb 2.0 YouTube re-mixer and 8-bit trip. Both required amazing levels of skill to organize and create for little benefit other than success.

I Want To Buy This Garbage

Posted by Benny Torres | March 30, 2009

nyc garbage

Although I’m no designer – I am a bit of a design geek (especially when it comes to packaging and icons). So when I happened upon this story at The Dieline (one of my favorite daily blogs) I felt compelled to share it.

“Artist and Entrepreneur” Justin Gignac has been creating something and selling it on a website, New York City Garbage. He picks garbage off the streets of NYC, arranges it in a clear cube, slaps a label on it that says “Garbage of New York City” (in Helvetica, naturally), and sells them online.

Gignac initially sold the cubes as a “gag gift” for $10 – but has since raised the price to $50 – $100. The higher priced versions feature garbage from special events like New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

I think the actual cubes themselves look great, but I’m even more smitten with the concept behind them. The cubes, according to Gignac, were born to prove that “packaging matters” by “packaging something that absolutely no one in their right mind would ever want to buy.” Then why oh why do I want one oh so much?

the alternative obama logos

Posted by Benny Torres | December 22, 2008

obama-08-logoSome alternative Obama logos have popped up – along with an interview outlining the history and strategy behind the now famous “O.” It’s interesting to note  first “millennial” president (or so people say) is also the one who was more throughly and deliberately “branded.” There was some real thought and thinking behind the logo and what it represented – which is more than can be said for most campaign logos. Personally, I love the logo that was eventually picked but seeing the strategy and meaning behind it makes it even cooler.

Twing Twang Goes The Teddy Bear

Posted by Benny Torres | November 7, 2008

teddyboom

As I once heard in a little known historical drama film called “Fight Club” – “I felt like destroying something beautiful.” In Kilimanjaro Magazine’s “Teddy Killers” piece – they’re destroying something… cute? The feature (project? thingamabob?) provides exactly what you’d think it would – rather beautiful footage of teddy bears being blown to bits. I really really love this, and I’m not sure what that says about me. (And kudos to you if you get the reference in the headline)
