Marketing’s Future in Fantasy

After being presented with the opportunity to take a trip to Las Vegas to talk with fantasy sports experts, I realized life can truly be too good at times. I had no idea this “fantasy” trip would also give me insight into the future of fantasy sports. Those same experts showed me that the industry 27 million consumers spend countless hours enjoying is preparing to go into many interesting directions in the future. Because of this fact, I recommend marketers get in the game (poor pun intended) sooner than later.

I had the pleasure of speaking at Fantasy Sports Trade Association’s 2010 Winter Business Conference last week. For those not familiar, the FSTA provides a forum for interaction between the hundreds of existing and emerging companies across the fantasy sports industry. My specific discussion revolved around the opportunity for advertising in the fantasy sports industry but the true insight for advertisers came from the many conversations held following the panel.

My College Football Fix

The title of this post doesn’t mean I am going to pontificate on my addiction to college football, but rather I have figured out a way to solve the controversy that annually seems to plague the NCAA Football Championship: I am proposing that we eliminate the National Championship from college football.

Culmination of a Paper Football Championship

Posted by John Durbin | July 13, 2009

Bienvenido “Benny” Torres and Christian Kugel struck their fists to their flat hands in a rock-paper-scissor “coin toss” to see who would get the opportunity to strike first in the inaugural Denuo Paper Football Championship Game. There was tepid anticipation in the air as their various vanquished opponents from the previous three rounds surrounded them to watch. Once players, they were now witnesses to desktop sports history. Only one of them (Albert Kim) had predicted that Torres and Kugel would meet in the finals. At the end of the count of three, Torres threw two fingers into a V shape, proclaiming scissors. The tension in the cold room was only matched by that of Kugel’s fingers. The maintained fist of rock signified the first victory of the day, and Kugel would receive the Torres kickoff to start the game.

Kickoffs are routine in just about every paper football game. But whenever Torres puts the edge of the paper football off his end of the table, preparing to slide the ball across the forboding black desktop, the crowd always sits with bated breath; each of them wondering if lightening would strike a second time.

Soft Serve and Pansy Leagues

The biggest difference between the NHL and the NBA today: The NHL rewards toughness. Lay a guy out with a good clean check and get celebrated by your coach and teammates back in the locker room. Spring right back up and continue skating AFTER getting laid out and you’ll earn your teammates’ and the other team’s respect for life. Same goes for the NFL.

mlb saves the president(ial inauguration)

Posted by John Durbin | January 20, 2009

Like most Americans, I had the full intention of watching the inauguration proceedings of our 44th President, Barack H Obama (nice move on the H, publicist) by way of the internets. However, in what I can only assume is one in a growing series of conspiracies against me, I couldn’t get any video players to work without brutal lag time. Everywhere.

What’s that? You’re so fascinated by this story you want some details? Well ok…
