Hey, remember when you only got your fashion fix through Vogue and watching MTV? (Okay, I didn’t have cable until I was like 15). But seriously, there wasn’t a lot to look up to back in the day – there’s no way I could afford any of those couture outfits in these glamour magazines, nor was there anyway I could pull them off…then or now. And the each magazine would have the latest fashion predictions for the following season, so basically I was dressing for fall when it was summer and for winter in the midst of the Santa Ana winds in October. But you know, I thought I was fashion-forward and I wanted to be on the cusp of the latest trends. I would breeze through a magazine within a day, load up on some more, and pretty soon I had entire walls stacked with old magazines. They were basically obsolete after I skimmed through the pictures and read through the articles, and rarely would I reopen them, lest to recall a specific brand or item. But thanks to the online world, I no longer have mounds of magazines against my wall, instead, it’s bookmark after bookmark of personal fashion blogs on my browser.
The rise of fashion blogs has seriously given me a new addiction – everyday girls, from Texas to Paris to Japan to California create and maintain their own fashion blogs, with daily picture uploads of what they’re wearing that day. What I’ve come to love is the fact that instead of seeing super skinny, flawless (ahem, read: airbrushed) models toting the most expensive and outrageous outfits that I could never buy or wear, I’m now looking at girls who are about my age, my height, my weight, with really cool styles who are pulling together outfits that I may not have thought of (though I may have the individual pieces). It’s seriously like having your own personal stylist…on your computer that you can see everyday. And bloggers always post where they bought their outfits from – mixing in designer duds with everyday wear – such as mixing Christian Louboutins with Forever 21 dresses. Genius, I say!
These fashion blogs are definitely a lot more personal, a lot more engaging, and a hundred times more addicting. They re-inspire your wardrobe, adding things you would normally pass up in a store, or make you revisit that one garment you were about to toss but now can pair up with something to make an outfit even more amazing. Maybe it’s because I lack a lot of “girl-talk” being the only girl in the LA office, but I seriously feel I have new best friends, and they are:
