In this issue you can enjoy the following:

  • Street Fighter Stop Motion: This YouTube video features a stop motion fight between two Street Fighter action figures. It’s a great example of the way the idea of universality of photos also works for videos.
  • Sad Etsy Dogs: This photo blog finds images of dogs on etsy modeling their owners creations. Let’s just say they look very pathetic. It shouldn’t be funny, but it is.
  • Hey Marty!: Sometimes quick, little one hits online are the funniest. This image and comment are matched perfectly. Just check it out.
  • Everyone Killed by Jason: This infographic is a bit morbid and pretty awesome. It represents everyone killed by Jason in all 12 films. You don’t have to have seen them all to appreciate both the excellence of data visualization represented as well just how blood thirsty Jason really was.

REFLECTEUR – Issue 89

Most of the time we tend to focus on the more serious side of digital culture or, at least, we look at more serious reasons why people are sharing. But we all know that most of the internet is just plain silly. It’s about time for us to give it it’s proper due. Therefore, in this issue you will get to learn about four amazingly ridiculous items:

  • 600 points, no deaths is a video of one player beating the original Super Mario Bros with the (almost) lowest score possible. There was one accidental goomba squish in there. Why would anyone do that? And why is it so impressive?
  • Hipster or Jesus is a photo blog that takes photos of hipsters that “look like” Jesus and asks if we think it’s actually him or just some weird hipster. The copy is what really makes this site amazing.
  • Best Backyard Battle Ever is an over-the-top, unbelievably awesome and bizarre video of a father and son’s backyard battle with little green soldiers and various other toys. It’s completely ridiculous and everyone of us wished our dad had played like this.
  • Darth Malkoff vs The Apple Store is Mark Malkoff’s attempt to see just what will get you kicked out of an Apple store. He couldn’t figure it out, but the video of his tests is great. It’s also a wonderful example of what happens when a brand embraces being a playground for its users.

Finally, this issue highlights the newest asset in the Reflecteur arsenal: DigitalCultureExplained.com. This site will feature all of the publication articles as well as original content. You can RSS the site as well as follow us on Twitter(@DigiCultEx) or fan us on Facebook. We hope you all take a moment to check out the new site.

REFLECTEUR – Issue 88

On page one of this issue we look at two examples of interesting photographs:

  • Dear Photograph: Reminiscent of Issue 79′s ‘Looking into the Past Images’ this site allows users to also include a short note addressed to the image. These one or two lines do an amazing job of expressing all of the emotions the individuals feels when he or she looks at that picture.
  • 100 Views from Planes: Like its name implies, this is a list of 100 photos taken from airplanes. And they are amazing. Few of us have the chance to see many of these locations from 30,000 feet and of the few that do, even fewer could take such great pictures of them.

Page two is a bit more silly.

  • Laser-cut zoetropes: A great example of a theme we’ve seen a lot of recently, these zoetropes take animated gifs and make them analog. Ironically, few of us will ever see these in their analog form, instead experiencing them digitally view videos and blog posts such as the one we included in the article.
  • Hardly Work.in: A pretty much useless but hilarious way to hide the fact that you aren’t working, this site turns your Facebook wall into a spreadsheet. Is there any other program that is more antithetical to Facebook?

REFLECTEUR – Issue 87

Posted by Lizzy Bogacki | July 7, 2011

This issue looks at a video that’s been making the rounds on many mommy blogs. In it a young boy rides his bike without training wheels for the first time. Luckily his dad was there to capture his rousing and over the top speech for all other children who are learning to ride their bikes. Also when he shouts ‘Thumbs up for rock and roll!’

Many of the things we highlight in Reflecteur are a great example of the way the digital space seems to often point out or discover the obvious for us – the things that make us go “why didn’t I think of that?!” Dirty Car Art is another great example of this.

Ever look at a picture of a historical figure and go “wow, that dude/lady is hot!” Turns out this is a pretty common phenomenon. We feature two blogs that collect old photos of hotness: Bangable Dudes in History and My Daguerreotype Boyfriend.

Finally, this issue looks at a blog post that chronicles the earthquake and tsunami clean up process in Japan. We see before and after photos of natural disasters all the time. But rarely do we see the actual process of cleaning up after the storm. These photos are amazing for how they capture how much and how little has been cleaned up.

Check out Page 3 where Linda Johnson, Dan Buczaczer and Anisha Alhuwalia explain how a brand can create social media connections that aren’t just “like”-deep.

REFLECTEUR – Issue 86

Did you know that some people think the Onion is real? And that they post articles from in to their Facebook as if they are true?  Or that twice a year the sun lines up perfectly with the east-west streets in New York City causing an amazing display of light called ‘Mahattanhenge”?  You will learn more about both those things on Page 1.

On page 2 you can wonder at what comes out of one man’s mouth as he sleeps. We really aren’t sure how his wife gets any sleep. And then you can see what the world would be like as a village of 100 people, but with the same demographic proportions. We bet it will give you some fresh perspectives on our planet.

There’s also a link to a site that only has cute animal videos on it.
